“I use a normal HB or # 2 pencil to roughly sketch things. Then I use a mechanical pencil to adjust the details, ”explains artist and illustrator Jung Hu Lee. "The combination can turn the pencil into a completely different medium," notes artist Violet Reed. "It's fun to experiment with that."
Don't stop there. Once you have finished a pencil sketch, you can scan or digitize it. Start with simple, solid outline drawings. Examine the outlines of objects. "Focus more on the ways your eyes see rather than how you think it should look," says Reed. With foreshortening and perspective, our brains can play tricks on us, so make an effort to draw what you really see.
Line drawings are especially useful for quick sketches and storyboards, but a little shading can go a long way. Consider adding hatching or cross hatching to your drawing and add value and tone to your designs with parallel and perpendicular lines. Another way to add shading to your sketches is to blend. Sometimes mixing digitally can be tricky, but you can learn to blur and blend shapes in Illustrator.
