Pencil Sketching tips

If it's a lack of drawing tips that is keeping you from starting your drawing journey, we've got you covered. Even if you just want to start by drawing a pencil sketch, it can be intimidating without a guide. So we asked seasoned artists to share their expert sketching tips to start your art journey.

You'll find all the steps you need to get started here, but if you're already one step ahead, you can jump to page 2 to understand how to build your existing skills. You may need technical advice or just ways to get inspired. Either way, there is something that can help you.

So get your pencils and sketch pad ready (need new tools? Check out our guide to the best pencils) and get ready to learn everything you can imagine about drawing.

01. Know your pencils

Having the right pencil to start drawing your pencil sketch is essential. Graphite hardness is indicated on the side of the pencil: 'B' pencils are softer, 'H' are harder, and 'HB' is in the middle; there is a big difference between a 4H and a 4B.

When learning to draw, it is also worth considering using mechanical pencils in conjunction with traditional ones. "Mechanical pencils are often better suited for precision, while traditional pencils are great for placing large areas of texture," says Von Rueden. "Note that most mechanical pencils come with HB pre-installed, which gives you only the mid-range to work with."

02. Take control of your pencil

"If you put your hand closer to the end of the pencil, you have more control and precision, but heavier strokes (darker marks)," .  "Gripping the pencil more will give you less control and precision, but clearer strokes (lighter marks)."

03. Try different branding methods

There are many drawing techniques to help you achieve different styles and effects. Above are some examples that demonstrate different ways to create shape and depth. "It's important to experiment and find what works best for you, not just to complement but to enhance your style," explains Von Rueden. "While I prefer smoother value transitions with pencil strokes blending into a thin outline, I may prefer cross hatching against a bold outline."

04. Vary your lines

Use varied lines, says illustrator Rovina Cai. "Not all lines are the same. Subtle changes in the width and darkness of the lines will create a visually interesting and dynamic drawing. Controlling the type of mark you place can be tricky at first, but with practice you can create a variety of marks that work together to form a cohesive image. Experiment with different pencil grades (3H to 6B) and holding the pencil at different angles. "

05. Avoid stains

"When shading, use an extra piece of paper under your hand," advises artist Brun Croes. "This will minimize the amount of smudging on the pencil lines by hand. If you are right handed, start shading from left to right; if you are left handed, start from the right and move left.

"There is nothing more frustrating than trying to make a clean drawing that loses its shine and value thanks to smudging. Instead, use smudging to your advantage from time to time to smooth out the shading. You can do this with various tools. I use a simple piece of tissue paper to do the job. "

06. Control your edges

Von Rueden uses four different drawing techniques to define the edges of objects: thin, hard, lost, and undefined. Thin, hard edges give objects solid edges. Missing edges occur when the object and background values start to blend, so the edge is implicit rather than defined. Undefined edges must be deciphered by the viewer himself. He suggests exploring all four types and combining them to create interest in your work.

07. Use a mixing stick to get a smooth shading

You can create smooth and blended effects with pencils, for example, to capture a sky. "Sometimes it is preferable that the shading is less sketchy and softer and more subtle," says artist Marisa Lewis. "Pencil lines don't blend perfectly unless you're very careful."

To avoid showing the initial scribbles, Lewis uses a particular art technique. "Use replacement paper to draw a large sample of soft graphite or charcoal pencil, then use a large mixing stick to pick up the soft powder and use it for your image," she explains. "Keep using the mixing paddle and add more squiggles as you need more graphite." You can then create darker areas to create definition.

08. Apply the 70/30 rule

Less can be more! The 70/30 rule helps you create effective compositions. The idea is that 30 percent of your sketch is filled with main focus and details, and the remaining 70 percent is fill. This less interesting area helps draw attention to the main subject of your artwork. You can see the ruler in action in Von Rueden's sketch above.

09. Make it symmetrical (but not quite)

"I like symmetrical drawings, but they often look boring all too quickly," says Croes. "A good way to prevent this is to add some subtle changes and only keep the general lines symmetrical instead of mirroring every small part. Keeping some elements asymmetrical helps to avoid boring repetition."

10. Differentiate different textures

To show different textures within your sketch, you need to adjust your technique. "You don't want to shade fur the same way you shade metallic or fur. Each has unique properties and captures that will elevate your drawings due to the precision rendered," says Von Rueden.

A good starting point is to consider whether the texture is rough or smooth, and then whether it absorbs or reflects light. "A smooth, reflective texture, like chrome, generally has higher contrasts and prominent highlights, while a rough, absorbent texture like cotton has low contrast and little to no lighting present," he continues.
