This scene is typical of the Nice interior scenes painted . Indeed, we can recognize the distinctive look of the women in blue gown with violin screen that forms the background for many compositions of the time. A standing young woman, holding a violin on her shoulder and a bow in her right hand, stands in front of a wall pattern on the screen.

A very similar version of this painting on a somewhat smaller scale and with the same title can be found today at the Baltimore Museum of Art in the United States. The composition of the Orangeries brings to the fore the clash between the curves and the straight lines that also structure the painting.

The screen ledges and the vertical lines of the door are aligned with the perpendicular lines of the table and chair legs, while the shadows cast by the table legs are exactly parallel to the arch. These straight lines are countered by an equal number of curved lines that respond to them: the circles on the screen, the curve of the young woman's body, face and hair also echo the curved lines of the instrument and her case. The theme of music appeared at the beginning of Matisse's work, the artist himself being a composer. The Nice period in particular was synonymous with daily violin practice for him.
